It was another long, damp night at Fenway on Tuesday but the Red Sox came away with their second walk-off win of the home stand, their fourth of the season. Boston beat the Blue Jays 5-4 in 15 innings. The Sox are now 8-2 in extra innings games.
For Toronto, 15 innings was their longest game of the same. The hapless Jays have lost seven of their last 10 games decided via walk-off and fall to 2-6 against the Red Sox this season.
Sox Flash Some Power, More Solid Relief
Though they still have the fewest home runs in the American League, the Sox belted three off the bats of Chris Young, Dustin Pedroia, and the game-winner by Hanley Ramírez. It was Ramírez’ third career walk-off HR, his first since last September 15 off Yankees reliever Dellin Betances. Hanley is now 42-for-100 (.420) in career extra innings appearances.
Brian Johnson, recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Pawtucket, worked 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts. He was relieved with three scoreless innings by Matt Barnes and Craig Kimbrel. A sore spot last year, Kimbrel has allowed just one run over 11.2 IP this season in 11 non-save situations for an 0.70 ERA.
Brandon Workman allowed a run in the 11th inning, but the Sox rallied with a two out single by Mookie Betts to re-tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Betts is now 15-for-37 (.405) against Toronto this season.
Hector Velázquez, another Pawtucket call up from earlier in the day, then gave the Sox 4.0 scoreless innings of relief (now 7.1 relief IP this season), allowing just two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Ramírez’ walk-off home run earned Velázquez his second career win.
The hard-fought Red Sox win was an important one as all AL East teams but the Blue Jays won in Tuesday night action.
Frazier Traded to Yankees
Throughout the day Tuesday were rumors the Red Sox were closing in on White Sox third baseman and free-agent-to-be Todd Frazier. Just after midnight, though, came word the Yankees had done a seven-player deal that sends Frazier, Tommy Kahnle, and David Robertson to the team.
The deal for Frazier cleared the path to the majors for one-time Red Sox top prospect Yoan Moncada who went to Chicago as part of the deal for Sox ace Chris Sale. Moncada slashed AVG/.285 OBP/.381 SLG with 12 home runs and 49 walks in 79 games at Triple-A this season.
