The Red Sox announced the 2018 inductees to the club’s Hall of Fame on Thursday. Derek Lowe, Mike Lowell, Kevin Youkilis and the late Buck Freeman were all selected by the 21-member Selection Committee.

Lowe (1997-2004), Lowell (2006-10), and Youkilis (2004-12) were all big contributors to the Red Sox’ success this century. John Frank “Buck” Freeman, who the Society for American Baseball Research calls “the first legitimate home run hitter in baseball history,” spent his final seven major league seasons with the Boston Americans from 1901-07. Freeman died in 1949.

The Committee also chose to induct 90-year-old Alphonso “Al” Green, who has spent the last 44 years working with the Red Sox, mostly in the team’s Fan Services information booth.

On Thursday the Committee also chose the major league debut of Pumpsie Green, the first African-American player in club history, as its Memorable Red Sox Moment of the Year. Green played four seasons (1959-62) with the Red Sox appearing in 324 games with the club.

About the Red Sox Hall of Fame

The Red Sox Hall of Fame was started in 1995 to recognize the significant contributions of former Red Sox players and managers. To be eligible, a player or manager needs at least three years tenure with the club and must also have been out of the game for at least three years. Non-uniformed individuals like Mr. Green can be chosen by a unanimous vote of the Selection Committee.

The most recent inductees to the Red Sox Hall of Fame were Ira Flagstead, Larry Lucchino, Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield. With Thursday’s announcement the Hall will feature 94 total members. Of those, 14 have been also been honored with a selection to the Baseball’s National Hall of Fame.

The newest club Red Sox Hall of Famers will be honored on May 24, 2018 at an event at the Westin Copley Place in Boston.
