Despite 6.2 shutout innings by Clay Buchholz, the Red Sox had to settle for a series split in Monday’s 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays on Patriots’ Day. Boston is now 69-52 for all time on the holiday.
Buchholz allowed no runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He also induced a career high four double plays. In all, Sox pitching delivered five double plays for just the second time since doing so August 31, 1993 against the Rangers. It was the most GIDP by Toronto since hitting into five exactly a year ago.
The Jays capitalized on a team effort of Sox miscues in the 8th inning for four quick runs. There was Josh Rutledge’s throwing error and Christian Vazquez’s passed balled. And yet again fans witnessed both the rare and the never-before-seen. The rarity, Koji Uehara beaning Josh Donaldson, It was Koji’s third batter hit in 345 career appearances. The first-time event, closer Craig Kimbrel, shown here just after walking in a run, something he hadn’t done in 361 previous career games.
The Red Sox had not previously lost a game this season when leading after seven innings. It was the Blue Jays first such win this season.
Dustin Pedroia, 1-for-4 on Monday, extended his on-base streak against AL East teams to 49 games, the longest such streak by any active player against a single division, according to Elias. It’s the second longest on-base streak against AL clubs by a Red Sox after 61 straight by Wade Boggs in 1984-85.
