2017 World Series Crew Chief Umpire Gerry Davis
Major League Baseball announced the umpire roster for the 2017 World Series today.
Gerry Davis, a 34-year MLB veteran will be the crew chief for this season’s Fall Classic. Davis has worked 136 career postseason games, the most of any umpire in major league history. Davis will be joined on the field by Phil Cuzzi, Laz Diaz, Dan Iassogna, regular season crew chief Bill Miller, Paul Nauert and Mark Wegner.
Umpire Wegner will be the Replay Official for Games 1 & 2. Wegner will then transition to left field with Umpire Cuzzi going to the replay booth for the remainder of the series. An eighth umpire, Tripp Gibson, will be the replay assistant throughout the series.
Game 1 for Davis will be his 25th as a World Series official. Among active umpires, only Joe West (34 games), Dana DeMuth (29), and Jeff Kellogg (28) have appeared in more such games.
Umpire West, the dean of the big league crew, worked in the 2016 series and is therefore ineligible for this year’s series under MLB rules.
The umpiring record for the most World Series games is held by Hall of Fame umpire Bill Klem, who worked 103 games of the Fall Classic games. Klem was a National League official from 1904-1941.
