Yankee spending isn’t about filling the trophy case

Think the Yankees need to turn their season around? An interesting article in the Wall Street Journal shows how this isn’t just about a thirst for more trophies.

According the records reviewed by the newspaper, revenue from ticket sales and stadium suite licenses was down to $295 million through the end of September this season. They were $353 million in 2012, $377 million in 2011 and a staggering $384 million in 2010.

And that’s just the beginning. TV viewership on the YES Network was dramatically off, and let’s not forget concession sales and licensing of team memorabilia. Losing costs teams dramatically, but especially the Yankees.

As baseball business specialist Vince Gennaro says in the article, “If the Yankees were an 85-win team or an 83-win team for three or four years in a row, they would suffer financially orders of magnitude more than any other franchise.”
