Back in March the Red Sox sent Deven Marrero to the Diamondbacks for a player to be named later. That player turns out to be minor league lefty pitcher Josh Taylor. The Sox announced the completion of the transaction on Tuesday.

Taylor, 25, was originally signed by the Phillies to a minor league deal in 2014. He went to Arizona in a trade the following summer. In all, he’s 20-28 with a 4.55 ERA in 101 minor league games, including 62 starts. This season, Taylor started at the High-A team Visalia Rawhide of the California League where’s he’s gone 1-2 with a 2.81 ERA in 14 relief appearances. He’s held lefty batters to a .125 batting average this season with no walks or extra-base hits allowed, and in 13 of his 14 outings he recorded at least one strikeout. The Phoenix native is listed at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds.

For his part, former Sox infielder Marrero is slashing .196 AVG/.250 OBP/.235 SLG with 13 strikeouts and 5 RBI in 29 games so far this season for the Diamondbacks.

Jay Groom undergoes ‘Tommy John’

In other pitching prospect news, the Red Sox announced that 19-year-old lefty prospect Jay Groome underwent successful Tommy John surgery on his left elbow on Tuesday in Los Angeles. Groome will miss the rest of this season and much of the next one, too.
