For the 13th season since 2000, Boston is off to a .500+ record by May 1, but the club couldn’t reach the .667+ mark set in 5 of those seasons, which notably includes the World Champion seasons of 2004, 2007, and 2013.
Even casual fans know the drill by this point. Boston starting pitching has played a big role in the team’s lackluster start. I’ve pointed out some of the problems here, here, and here, among other places at RSNStats.com.
I’ve also covered why getting out of the gate strong is valuable not just for the wins, but for the psyche of a team.
Some fans are concerned that the front office will be too slow to address the pitching problems, but not all analysts agree on the need for immediate change, particularly given the Red Sox’ run production thus far.
Over on fangraphs.com, Craig Edwards’ analysis using Field Independent Pitching, among other measures, concludes that, “For the entire [Red Sox] rotation, the projections see better days ahead.”
