Xander Bogaerts belted his second grand slam of the young season in Monday making him one of just 11 Sox sluggers with multiple slams in the same season since 2000.
And despite that mighty accomplishment in so few games of this season (and even coming after a recent stay on the disabled list), there are some truly standout performances on the list of Boston’s most-recent multi-slam sluggers.
Sox Single-Season Multi-Slammers Since 2000
Starting with Carl Everett, who had two grand slams in 2001, here are the other Red Sox with at least than many in a single season:
- Mike Lowell, two grand slams in 2008
- Ryan Kalish, two in 2010
- Mike Napoli, three in 2013
- Will Middlebrooks, two in 2013
- Dustin Pedroia, two in 2016
- Xander Bogaerts, two in 2018 (to date)
Special Achievements
And here are some Red Sox since 2000 who deserve some special acknowledgements for their multi-slam seasons:
- Like the others, switch-hitter Bill Mueller belted two grand slams in a single season, but he distinguished himself by becoming the only a major leaguer to slam twice in the same game and from both sides of the plate. Even more astounding, Mueller’s slams came in consecutive at-bats and that his night also included a solo home run against the Rangers on that steamy July 29 night in 2003.
- Manny Ramírez connected for multiple grand slams in the back-to-back seasons of 2004-05, including three slams in 2005. Boston’s superlative clutch hitter David Ortiz matched Manny in 2005 and blasted two more in the 2006 season.
- Of particular note is Trot Nixon‘s multiple grand slams in back-to-back-to-back seasons. He had two slams in 2001, 2002 and 2003.
